Don't you hate it when you are trying to do dishes and your 2 year old swipes the bottom dish rack out of the dish washer, fills it with toys and drives it around the living room?

You know that face couldn't possibly get into trouble.

These pajamas are way to big for Weston, but he loves them anyway. The other day I hear fussing coming from the bathroom as he struggles getting them back on straight. When he finally came out I realize that he had put the feet on backwards and then twisted the middle around and zipped it up around his body.

A Pilot for a Day

Weston was told to come to school dress as what he wants to be when he grows up. We have never really discussed what he wanted to be, but he really like the weather so I asked him if he wanted to be a weather man. I showed him some videos of Weather Men on YouTube. He said no, he didn't want to be a Weather Man. He also likes to spend a lot of time looking at control towers and airports so we watched some videos of what goes on inside control towers. I asked him if he wanted to work in a control tower when he grows up. He said no, I want to be a pilot! Okay, do you want to be the kind of pilot who flies jets or the kind of pilot who flies people around. I showed him videos of fighter jets and he decided he wanted to fly people around. I found this hat on amazon.com and ordered it for him.

When he got home I asked him what his teacher thought of his outfit. He said, "She just thinks I'm adorable".

I thought about getting Dallin a new costume so he doesn't get a complex about wearing Weston's hand-me-downs. But as soon as Dallin laid eyes on this monkey suit he wanted to wear it- all day every day.

This will definitely go down in the history books. A very memorable "Westonism".

We are finishing up dinner when Weston takes a bite out of his quesadilla and says, "Hey! This looks like Minnesota!" What? So we pull out a map and sure enough...

it looks just like Minnesota!

It seems like this would make more sense it it was Florida or Utah or at least a state he's been to or a state where a friend or relative lives. Crazy kid.

Daddy's birthday

I bought a fondue pot and we had cheese fondue for dinner with chunks of delicious steak, chicken shrimp, broccoli, and french bread. Oh and fresh strawberry lemonade.

Weston and Dallin loved this.

Then we had chocolate fondue for dessert (daddy doesn't like cake anyway) with strawberries, pineapple, bananas, orange segments, and cantaloupe.

Bathroom remodel

Before:

The basement (now master) bathroom. It's an awkward shape with no counter space, no storage and whiter than white- with the exception of that ugly brown mirror.

After:

I went bold with the walls. These pictures don't do it justice due to the camera flash. I LOVE the color. I think it's awesome. We replaced that ugly brown mirror. We got a matching bathroom set from IKEA. That thing (I don't know what to call it) has toilet paper and other, ahem, bathroom products in it.

This shelf fit perfectly in that random nook.

It took 3 trips to JC Penney to finally decide on the towels I wanted. Looking back, it would have been more time and cost effective if I had bought every towel in the store, brought them all home and then returned the ones I didn't like. (Matching cloth baskets from IKEA)

I bought this tiling was on a whim. I was in Lowe's and I though "I really like that tile and I know just where to put it!" Then we got a big mirrored medicine cabinet to hang above it. (The row of candles are also from IKEA on sale for $1)

I think he was excited until he saw that school bus pull up. He seemed to go from excited to panic in an instant. But he lined up and got right on that bus without hesitation.

..... and then I sobbed, hopped in the van and drove to school just to make sure he made it to class. Then I drove home and sobbed some more...

The Fair

I believe a trip to the fair is an essential part of a child's life. I have fond memories of the rides, games, food and animals as a kid. Mike, on the other hand, believes that the fair is nothing but hillbillies, cigarette smoke and fried food. He wants nothing to do with it. So the boys and I went with some friends.

We picked the first tomato of the summer. I had Weston hold it, got my camera and said, "smile, Weston". This is what I got (and very typical of what I get when I ask him to smile for a picture):

Mike says we should be glad that he is "real" and won't just smile because you tell him to. He only smiles when he is genuinely happy. I think it would be nice to have some pictures of Weston smiling.

We had a great 4th. We spent some time playing with friends in the park. Afterwards we came back to our house for a BBQ. Then we headed out to see some fireworks.

Weston woke up to a room filled with balloons. He requested German pancakes for his birthday breakfast. We then went to see Cars 2. Weston asked why we always go see a movie for his birthday and we explained that he just has a lucky birthday when there is always a good movie in the theater.

Dallin was such a helpful little brother. Every time the coach sent the boys to get a water break Dallin would grab the water bottle and run it out to Weston on the field. Then he would come back and sit. Then when the coach called them back, Dallin would run out onto the field and get the water bottle and bring it back.

Holocaust survivor

I attended a lecture from this woman, Edith Lowy. One of the first things she did when she arrived was pull out the dress she wore in the concentration camps. The war began for her at the age of 10 when "Jews and dogs" were no longer allowed in stores. She was liberated at 16. Her mother was killed in a gas chamber. Her younger brother was shot and killed at the age of 11. She endured working camps, concentration camps and the death march. Her story was unimaginable.

This is her message:

Don't take anything in your life for granted.

Cherish the people who love you and who mean much to you.

Appreciate the way you live and the freedom you have to make choices.

Remember that you are among the last ones to hear the story of the Holocaust directly from us, the survivors.

There are not many of us left to tell you about the evil, the pain, and the unbelievable suffering that man can inflict on man. Although it is not easy for us to speak about it, we feel that it is our responsibility to do so. We feel that we owe it to the memory of those who were so brutally silenced. We also owe it to the following generations which were born from the ashes.

As we honor the memory of those who perished in the Holocaust and as we recall the unspeakable horrors, we must also remember those Gentiles who in a mostly silent world of terror and fear, sacrificed their own safety and security and risked their own, and often their families' lives, to help and rescue Jews.

We wish we could assure you that the world you live in today will always remain peaceful and safe, but we can not -- we can only hope that it will be. You can help to make it happen. By talking to you we hope that we can alert you not to close your eyes, your ears and your hearts to injustice, unfairness, intolerance and cruelty. We hope that you will fight them as soon as you see them, so that tragedies like the Holocaust will never happen again.

As survivors, who will soon be gone, it is our hope that you will continue teaching our lesson to others and to your children and that you will strive to make the world a better and safer place to live in.

I got out of the shower and found Dallin at the foot of the stairs squirting a family size bottle of ketchup on a couple of buns he pulled out of the pantry. Luckily I found him before too much damage was done to the carpet. And I learn once again that I can't shower while he is awake.

The funny thing is thinking about his train of thought. Oh look, buns! We open them up and spread them out. Now I need some KETCHUP! Open the refrigerator find the ketchup bring it back to the stairs, turn bottle over and squirt!

I wonder, if I hadn't found him at this point, what would he have done next?

Best Mother's Weekend EVER!

Saturday we road the ferry across the Potomac River and went out to dinner and then shopping at the outlet mall in Virginia. It was such a beautiful night, the boys were excellent and I got a new purse!
Sunday, Mike made breakfast (eggs potatoes and fresh fruit). Then at church the primary sang songs to their mothers. Weston, of course, didn't sing, but made faces at me. The best part was when Weston wasn't paying attention and the kids were instructed to leave the stage. He stayed behind in his own world while the music leader was swinging her arms trying to get his attention and tell him to get off the stage. The bishop finally had to get up and tell him it was time to get down, but not before everyone in the congregation was laughing.

And now I have nothing left to do but spend the day relaxing, blogging and enjoying not cooking or cleaning.

Dallin's communication skills have really taken off recently. Ever since he was very young he seemed eager to communicate with us.

On top of all this, he understands everything you tell him. If you say "Dallin, where are your socks?" he will remember that he took them off during nap time and go upstairs and find them. If I say, "It's time to get Weston from school." Dallin will run to the door and will wait there until I'm ready to go.

Recently I was in the shower and realized I forgot my towel. I just called out to Dallin, "Go bring mama a towel" and he did.
He is also good at communicating exactly what he wants. If he wants something in the pantry, he will come stand a few feet in front of me, make eye contact, then turn and walk to the pantry and point to what he wants. He once made up his own sign language to tell me what he wanted. He was pointing to something on my dresser. I shrugged my shoulders and said "I don't know what you want". So Dallin held one hand out flat, palm up and then put the finger from his other hand in the center of the palm of his open hand. Meaning, of course, that he wanted me to put lotion in his hand.

It was good, it could have been great if it wasn't over cooked. :(

He even said "potato" when he wanted more.

Weston's says "goin' to" every day.
Example from the other morning:

Mom: Weston, did you put your school clothes on yet?
Weston: Goin' to.
Mom: Weston! Are your school clothes on yet???
Weston: Goin' to.
Mom: How about now? Are you school clothes on?
Weston: GOIN' TO!!!
Mom: WESTON! ARE YOU DRESSED YET!?!?!
Weston: Would you stop asking that question, mama?!?
Mom: Well, Are you dressed?
Weston: Goin' to.

Back to Saturday morning:
Still no sign of Weston or his socks.

Mike: Weston, did you find your socks yet?
Mike then goes upstairs to get Weston and the socks.

About 10 minutes has gone by and now Weston has his socks on.

Mike: Where are your shoes?
Weston: I don't know.

Another 5 minutes later...

Mike has Weston sitting down putting his shoes on and just for fun I told Mike, "Just so you know, if this had been a school day, you are officially LATE!"

We had our own little Halloween party with a few friends.

The kids decorated ghost cup cakes and played. The grown ups just chatted.

Dallin loved Weston's fireman costume. He wore it more than Weston did.

Setting: Laying in bed, Dallin is crying in his crib.
Me: I just want to go hold him.
Mike: You can hold me instead.
Me: It's not the same...
Mike: Would it help if I cried?

Setting: I need to show Mike something on the computer but he is in my chair.
Me: Uh, I need my chair. I can't explain it standing over here. I need to be sitting in my chair.
Mike: (Doesn't move)
Me: Jumping up and down, flailing around and pretending to have a melt down because he won't let me sit in my chair.
Mike: You do "neurotic" well.

Most of my posts are about my fabulous and adorable children, but I should also mention my fabulous and adorable husband.

Anyone who has met Mike knows I won the lottery with this choice of husband/father combo. Occasionally, he says the sweetest things and I just wanted a place to jot them down so I don't forget them.

A while back Mike went out with a bunch of his guy friends. They did a bunch of fun "guy" things. When he came home he said to me, "That was a lot of fun, but I prefer spending time with my wife."

Once I was telling him stories from my childhood and he said "Robin, if I knew you as a child, I would have been knocking on your parents door every day saying, 'Can Robin come out and play?'"

We were loving the Bourne Identity trilogy. One night I asked him what he would do if I got amnesia and he said "I'd have fun making you fall in love with me again".

Recently someone said I was so lucky to have Mike because he is so good to me, he spoils me rotten, he does the dishes, he bathes the children, etc. When I relayed the info to Mike he simply said, "Isn't that how I should treat my queen".

Halloween Crafts

Project 1: Making fall leaves into ghosts.
Verdict: What a pain. It took several coats of paint over a few days to get it all done.

I wanted Heath Bar, Mike requested cinnamon sugar, and Weston just wanted plain caramel.

Dinner in the Kinney home:

-Dallin tries to eat a green bean off of his belly.

-Weston takes his socks off and makes hand puppets with them.

-Mom swipes the socks from Weston and tosses them to Daddy.

-Daddy take the socks and puts them on his ears.

-Dallin drives his green beans around the table making car noises.

I imagine that normal people's dinners are boring and a lot easier to clean up after.

First Day of PreSchool

Today is Weston's first day of Pre-School. He has been so excited he could hardly sleep. He was up and in my bed this morning a half hour earlier than usual. (That's okay, I needed to get up anyway) There were no attachment problems once I dropped him off. (I put on my brave face)

He insisted on wearing his orange shirt today. He is sporting his new "ELF School" bag. (Early Learning Fun) I checked out a lot of preschools and I am certain this one is the best fit for him. They move him around a lot to different classrooms for different activities. I think that will be best for his attention span. (Or lack thereof)

Interesting Days

I was unloading my camera today after about a week of random pictures. I was going through them with Mike. I found myself saying, "that day was uh, interesting....".

Like the day I found toilet paper coming out of the bathroom door.

Or the day Weston was so miserable he eventually fell asleep at the foot of the stairs.

And the day Dallin pulled a family size bag of Cheetos off the kitchen table and dumped the contents all over the floor.
